Scholarship Is an Alumna’s Lasting Legacy

Dr. Vivien L. Kwiatek ’65, ’69 MA

The name Kwiatek means “flower” in Polish. Thanks to the generosity of the Kwiatek family, an alumna’s legacy of education will blossom and always be remembered at Montclair State University.

Dr. Vivien L. Kwiatek ’65, ’69 MA was a proud graduate of Montclair State. A gifted scholar and valedictorian of her high school class, she was awarded a New Jersey state scholarship to attend Montclair State. An English major with a minor in history, Vivien in her student days was a member of the Aldornia honor society and Kappa Delta Pi, the international education honor society, and she earned Dean’s List recognition as well.

Vivien was a dedicated English teacher for many years at Millburn High School. She was devoted to her students and stayed in touch with many of them through the years. She also had numerous friends among her fellow teachers. Vivien earned a PhD from the University of Maryland and was an active educational leader and a lifelong learner.

Sadly, Vivien passed away after a brief illness at the age of 56 on September 1, 2000. (Her beloved father, Stanley Kwiatek, died the same month.) Vivien’s mother, Louise Kwiatek, established in her will the Vivien L. Kwiatek Scholarship for an English major at the University as a meaningful and lasting tribute to her beloved daughter at Vivien’s alma mater.

The Kwiatek family’s legacy gift will help ensure that Montclair State University’s mission of providing opportunities to talented and dedicated students is fulfilled for today’s students and for generations of students yet to come.
